Byodo-In

Byodo-In

Byodo-In (平等院) is unlike any other temple in Japan. It’s unusual design represents a mythical bird, the phoenix. This famous temple may be seen on the Japanese ten yen coin, and its phoenix statue is on the back of the ten thousand yen banknote. A smaller replica of the temple was also built in Hawaii. Located in Uji, a short trip south of Kyoto by train, it is a short walk across the river from Ujigami-jinja, which is also a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.
