Kiyomizu-dera

Kiyomizu-dera

Kiyomizu-dera (清水寺) is famous all over Japan and is one of the most visited temples in Kyoto. It is built on the edge of a cliff from huge timbers held together without nails. The 12 meter high veranda overlooks the gardens in the valley below, and the city of Kyoto to the west. It is one of the most famous temples for viewing sakura blossoms or the brilliant fall colors of the maple trees. Any time of the year, it is a great place to watch the sunset behind Kyoto City.
