Koke-dera (苔寺) is called the Moss Temple because of the 120 species of moss that blanket the lower garden. There are two levels of gardens. The upper level is a stone garden that looks over the lower garden. In the middle of the lower garden is a pond in the shape of the Chinese character for heart (kokoro). The delicate moss in the garden is so beautiful that access is now limited to protect it. You must now make a reservation at least one week in advance to visit this temple. The official name of the temple is Saiho-ji (西芳寺). It is on the Japanese list of Special Places of Scenic Beauty.
