Shimogamo Jinja

Shimogamo-jinja (下賀茂神社), and nearby Kamigaomo-jinja, are among Kyoto’s oldest and most famous shines. Both were built before Kyoto became the capital. Shimogamo is the older of the two. The original structures on the site are believed to be from the 6th century. Records show that an early shrine was built there in 678.
